Abraham Lincoln had perhaps the most significant and familiar face since George Washington, yet one difficult to describe from any angle. We at "Touching the Face of History" are fortunate to have in our possession a plaster mask that is an authentic 19th century cast from the original 1860 Leonard Wells Volk life mask.

To date this is the only plaster mask we have found (after two years of research) with a seal imbedded within the back of the plaster to mark its authenticity. The seal was placed by the master plaster craftsmen of the Caproni Brothers Foundry of Boston, a foundry no longer in existance. This traces the mask back to the actual original by Leonard Wells Volk. From this, a bronze mask has been meticulously produced. It is now available in its exact form, that of the 1860 life mask of Abraham Lincoln.

Few people outside of those visiting museums or private collections have ever had the privilege of seeing and much less ever touching the actual facial form of this great man. On careful examination you will be able to feel the structural abnormalities from childhood trauma, see the suggestions of an ongoing disease process and a few other surprises (these will be provided with references and pictures). By touching this mask you are touching the image of perhaps our greatest American leader tormented by a bloody civil war, dying from disease and finally succumbing to an assassin's bullet.

Certainly this would be a treasure to grace any home or establishment of education that cherishes the history of our great nation and one of its greatest commanders. The Bronze mask weighs approximately 15 pounds with the base of polished black absolute granite weighing 14 pounds. Abraham Lincoln's exact signature is inscribed in the front of the base. The face swivels effortlessly on a brass pin imported from Italy. The total height is approximately 15 inches with the mask alone being 12.5 inches. Variations in weight and height may occur, however slight, as a result of each being hand-made for the institution or individual at the time of ordering. Welcome to our site.
